My Place 09,
a Local Studies Library / School Project
This pilot project took place in November and December 2009. The Longford schools participating were Melview N.S. 4th class with their teacher Christine Treacy, St Joseph's N.S. 5th class with their teacher, Mrs Fitzmaurice, Tashinny N.S. senior class with their teacher Yvonne Mc Hughes and Colehill N.S. 5th class with their teacher Helena Egan.
The project was designed to explore the possibilities of researching local heritage in an highly entertaining and enjoyable manner whilst fully engaging with the SESE curriculum, especially history.
The prime focus, however, was to develop awareness of the many invaluable resources made available in the library Local Studies Room and how the schools could be best supported in making best use of them.
The teachers' resource pack (in development) will be one of the outcomes of this pilot project. It offers a six to eight week class local studies project including approach, worksheets, enrichment activities and resources required.
The first part of the resource pack is designed to encourage the development of effective research skills alongside new discoveries about "My Place".
Part two will offers enhancement activities with ideas for creative writing, including poetry as well as a response through art and craft. (examples from the project are available below)
Part three will contain the class worksheets and library resources to support the “My Place” project.
